History:

Rokurou was born the sixth son of the Rangetsu family, a family of warriors who had served a nearby count's family for generations. When Rokurou's eldest brother, Shigure, began making plans to leave and turn his back on his role as leader of the Rangetsu clan, a rumor began to spread that Shigure was plotting to overthrow the count and Rokurou was tasked with assassinating his brother. One he gladly took on; he had long harbored an unspoken desire to get rid of his brother and had spread the rumor himself so he could give himself the opportunity to defeat the greatest swordsman he knew and take over his place as leader of their clan.

But when the time came to put his plan into motion and finally kill his brother, Rokurou fell short. Far short. His brother made a fool of him during the fight before leaving as he said he would, leaving Rokurou behind, bitter and angry and desperate. It was in this condition that the count's soldiers found him, and he was quickly exiled to an island prison to rot for failing to perform his duty.

Soon after his exile, the bitterness toward his brother built up in his body in the form of malevolence, eventually turning him into a daemon. While most daemon tended to lose themselves to the transformation and become mindless, vicious monsters, Rokurou was able to retain his sanity through his focus on defeating his brother. He actually grew to care less about why he initially wanted to fight, setting aside his desires to lead the clan, and more on the simpler but much more enticing idea of defeating the world's greatest swordsman, Shigure.

Three years later, during a prison riot initiated by another daemon named Velvet, Rokurou took the opportunity to break out of his own cell and try to make his escape as well. Though they fought blade-to-blade when they first ran into each other, Velvet was the one to point Rokurou in the direction of where Stormquell was being kept, the longsword broken by his brother during their fight. In return for the favor, Rokurou helped her in her escape, vowing to stay at her side until he felt his debt repaid.

In keeping that promise, Rokurou traveled the world with Velvet and her gathered band of misfits, their single goal to get revenge on the man who had killed her brother. A man who by coincidence was the same man Shigure now worked under, allowing Rokurou to once again cross paths with his brother. Though he was defeated again on their first reunion, Rokurou was persistent, pursuing fights at Velvet's side to strengthen himself and seeking the aid of a master swordsmith turned daemon named Kurogane to construct a blade that could withstand a blow from Shigure's legendary sword. The two became allies, both dedicated to defeating the great swordsman, and so devoted to the cause that Kurogane eventually turned himself into a blade for Rokurou to wield in battle against his brother. And Rokurou, hungry for any power that would lead him to defeating his brother, let him with a quiet goodbye.

In helping Velvet walk the final steps in pursuing her revenge, Rokurou was able to achieve his own, taking Shigure down in one last fight using the three-sword fighting technique he'd created himself specifically to combat him. Satisfied with their duel, Rokurou took his brother's sword, Stormhowl, and kept his promise to Velvet, helping her to achieve her goal. Afterwards, he moved on to travel the world alone, continuing his path of becoming the strongest swordsman.

Personality:
One could say that after turning into a daemon, Rokurou became a lot more relaxed and easy going. The more accurate description would be that after turning into a daemon, Rokurou's sense of humanity diminished and his empathy levels dropped drastically. His desires for the leadership of the clan, recognition from his family, all of that faded away to the simple desire to fight. He's not dead on the inside, and is still plenty capable of experiencing emotions and showing interest, but he just doesn't find himself caring about things the way he used to as a human. Rokurou does recognize this point about himself, and can tell when his own reactions to tragic events aren't quite in line with others, but even then he doesn't see anything wrong with it. It's just the way he is now, 'heartless daemon' and all.

Even though he's not able to fully exhibit the full range of human emotions, Rokurou's got enough of one that showcases a fun-loving personality, albeit with a mildly warped sense of fun. Aside from fighting, he greatly enjoys drinking and dispensing sometimes questionable adult-advice to the youngest member of the party. He greatly enjoys poking away at the secrets of his friends, but has just enough sense of self preservation to know when to stop. While not a troublemaker, Rokurou's invasiveness can quickly and easily land him in trouble, which he'll all too happily face with a grin.

What Rokurou's lack of caring also translates into is someone who can go with the flow, so long as the flow is in the same rough direction as his own desires. For the most part he's more than happy to let someone else take the wheel and follow along, just to see how things will turn out. It's his curiosity that drives him on topics that aren't centered around fighting, and he believes in following things through to the end to see how they work out. His own shady past has also made him very open-minded to the darker aspects of others; in fact, he encourages others to follow whatever path they desire, since that's the same way he lives his own life.

Having a laid back personality doesn't stop Rokurou from being very open with his opinions, however conflicting they may be. Which is the nice way of saying he has absolutely no sense of tact when it comes to sensitive subjects. He will very freely say what's on his mind, make light jabs at the people around him, and even ask the question that's on everyone's minds that might be too rude to say. Calling him out on his tactlessness will get a half-apology, but won't really stop this bad behavior. He's also more than willing to get into the dumbest little fights if he has strong feelings on the topic, no matter how ridiculous the topic may be.

Though he's led a life of numerous betrayals as a human, Rokurou holds a deep rooted sense of honor as a warrior that he's carried with him even into his new life as a daemon. He follows a warrior's code, throwing everything into every fight he has, big or small, with the expectation that his opponent will do the same. Repaying debts falls under that honor code, especially when the debt involves weaponry that's important to him, but combat is about the extent of that sense of honor.

That being said, Rokurou's the sword-equivalent of trigger happy, especially when there's the prospect of a good fight. If there's a strong enemy around, he's the first one in line with swords in hand. This centers heavily around the idea that he's constantly training to hold his status as the strongest swordsman. Violence may not always be the answer, but it is at least 80% of the time as far as Rokurou's concerned.

As a daemon, Rokurou's been gifted with enhanced speed and strength, which lends to his training as a dual blade swordsman, favoring a pair of short swords but also capable of using a pair of longswords if so inclined. Like most daemons, he doesn't need to eat (but can and enjoys doing so on occasion), and isn't bothered extreme temperatures.
